Travel Light!

We just started the first leg of our journey, a two-day visit to London, where a lot of round-the-world airfares start and finish. Luckily there are a few cheap flights to choose from between Wroclaw, our beautiful hometown, and London. We took Ryanair which, for its insanely cheap tickets puts several restrictions. BTW, it is cheaper to fly from Wroclaw to London (1:45 hours), than taking a bus from one London airport, Stanstead, to another, Heathrow (same travel time).

One of the restrictions is the luggage weight. You might think a carry-on limit of 10 kg and one piece of luggage up to 15 kg per person would not be sufficient for a family going away for 365 days. Well, we successfully squeezed in all the essentials thanks to Ania’s great packing discipline and challenging all of us on what is really needed. Travel light! What a great learning in prioritizing important stuff in life!

 The last days of preparations felt like the last kilometers of an Ironman. We were tired of all the preparations and juggling this process with work, school. The perspective of the finish… or rather starting line kept us going.

The school teachers and headmaster were very helpful in helping us take the kids out of school half way through the year. This is by no means a standard procedure. Yet with good intentions and commitment from all sides it is doable. The headmaster is a geography teacher, which perhaps was helpful to move things forward.

Now the schooling will be on our shoulders for the next 12 months. Ania, who will be the main home teacher, desires to share some more info on the homeschooling experience as we gain it.

In those last days before departure we often heard from people the following question “do you have everything planned and ready”?

Well, it is not a trip for 2 weeks, or even a month but for a much longer period covering so many places. So to have everything planned would be impossible. Besides, we still do not know a lot of things for sure but only have some approximations. One of the things more certain is our flight itinerary (Our Route). But even this is still in a flux since you cannot even fix certain flight dates so much ahead of time. Reservations systems simply do not allow it. This whole planning such just teaches us to be patient and exercise our faith.
On that, we heard a great quote recently in a movie:
If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.

Final countdown

Today, 30 days before starting our sabbatical, we are inaugurating officially our sabbatical blog. Given a large group of our Polish and English speaking friends we commit to be running the blog in both languages.

To make our life simpler, all blog entries in both languages will be available chronologically on the Blog link. You will also be able to sort through single language version by clicking the language categories links (Polish, English) on the right side bar.

Thirty days is not a lot of time given the amount of work still ahead. We need to juggle it with our daily duties. The vision of the incredible adventure is making all the effort easier. What make it sweeter also are those magic moments that happen daily in our lives. For example, we learned from voice emission expert that our son, Wojtus, a happy and proud member of the Wroclaw Cathedral Choir (Pueri Cantores Wratislaviensis), has a unique opera voice.  His conductor, Father Stanislav, cannot praise Wojtus enough for his vocal talents. When he learned we were leaving he wished us … bad luck in planning the trip. Sounds mean of him, yet he just does not want to miss for a year one of his best students.
We are hopeful that both Wojtes and Ania, who is passionate about ballet dancing, will have a chance to develop their passions while en route.

While talking to the voice expert we also learned whom to listen to and whom to avoid. In the first group were obviously the famous three tenors. In the latter, Andrea Bocceli, who being a self-taught singer generally has a “messy” voice. Besides avoiding romantic singer not to pick up too early the vibrato technique was recommend. Generally, we feel very well, particularly being after a round of necessary vaccinations (7 shots per adults, 3 per kids). Despite a few tears shed kids took the whole process bravely. Vaccinations for a four-person family are not cheap, ca. $1000. In addition there is a whole bunch of medicine necessary for the trip including the bloody expensive anti-malaria drug, Malarone. The kids are learning now to swallow pills, which is not easy.

We must admit that in the last two months of preparations we learned a couple of new skills. Here are some of them:

  • creating a blog/Web page
  • home schooling children in Poland
  • tropical deseases prevention
  • volunteering in Latin America
  • „travelling light” etc.

Among the many benefits of sabbatical preparation there is one more particular, i.e. house cleaning. We managed to rent our house during our absence. Therefore it is necessary to get it ready for rental. It’s amazing how much stuff we have accumulated in 10 years of our marriage! There also comes a series of necessary medical check ups. Luckily, we are all healthy. As for “spiritual” cleaning, its time will come as well.

Ostatnie odliczanie

Dziś oficjalnie, na 30 dni przed rozpoczęciem naszego rocznego urlopu (sabbatical) inaugurujemy naszego bloga, którego zobowiązujemy się prowadzić w czasie naszej podróży. Ze względu na duże grono przyjaciół polsko i anglojęzycznych będziemy prowadzić tego bloga w obu językach. Dla uproszczenia wpisy polskie i  ich angielskie tłumaczenia będą dostępne na jednym blogu chronologicznie. Ponadto będzie można je łatwo sortować klikając po prawej stronie kategorie Polish lub English.

30 dni to niewiele a jeszcze sporo pracy przed nami. Poza tym codzienne obowiązki, praca, dom, dzieci. Wizja niezwykłej przygody wynagradza nam te codzienne trudy. Poza tym, jak to w życiu, na co dzień dzieją się rzeczy niezwykłe wręcz magiczne. Dziś na przykład dowiedzieliśmy się od eksperta emisji głosu, że nasz syn, Wojtuś, który od kilku miesięcy jest szczęśliwym członkiem katedralnego chóru we Wrocławiu (Pueri Cantores Wratislaviensis) ma unikalny głos operowy. Zdążyliśmy się już przyzwyczaić do jego nieustannego śpiewania (przy ubieraniu, myciu, w drodze do szkoły …) oraz ciągłych pochwał od dyrygenta chóru. Nota bene, dyrygent cały czas liczy na to, że jednak się nam ta podróż nie uda, tak aby Wojtuś jednak nie wyjeżdżał na rok :-). Usłyszeć jednak takich zachwytów od wymagającego i niełatwo wzruszającego się eksperta się nie spodziewaliśmy. Miejmy nadzieję, że w trakcie naszego podróży Wojtuś będzie miał okazję rozwijać swój talent podobnie jak Ania, która nie może żyć bez tańca. Przy okazji dowiedzieliśmy się, jakich śpiewaków ekspert poleca do słuchania aby dalej kształcić głos. Są wśród nich trzej tenorzy, oczywiście. Raczej unikać należy na przykład Andrea Bocceli, który jest samoukiem i generalnie „bałagani” gdy śpiewa. Poza tym nie poleca śpiewów romantycznych, tak aby nie rozwijać zbyt wcześniej techniki vibrato. Takie tam ciekawostki, które uwielbiam.

Ogólnie czujemy się bardzo dobrze, szczególnie, że jesteśmy po zakończeniu serii niezbędnych szczepień (dorośli po 7 kłuć, dzieci na szczęście tylko 3). Nie obyło się bez płaczu dzieci. Poza tym jest to spory wydatek dla cztero-osobowej rodziny, około PLN 2,5 tys. Do tego dochodzi jeszcze sporo medykamentów prewencyjnych w tym szczególnie drogi lek antymalaryczny, Malarone, który trzeba będzie brać na podróż po Azji Pd.Wsch. Dzieci już się uczą łykać tabletki, co nie przychodzi łatwo. Musimy przyznać, że w ciągu ostatnich dwóch miesięcy przygotowań dowiedzieliśmy i nauczyliśmy się wielu nowych rzeczy. Oto kilka z nich:

  •  robienie strony internetowej i pisanie bloga
  • rozpoznanie tematu edukacji domowej (tzw. Home schooling)
  • choroby tropikalne i prewencja
  • wolontariat w Ameryce Łacińskiej
  • jak „odchudzić” bagaż, itd.

Pośród wielu plusów tych przygotowań jest jeszcze jeden szczególny, tj. robienie porządków. Udało nam się na okres wyjazdu wynająć dom. Trzeba go zatem przygotować do wynajmu. Poza tym robienie porządków w papierach, pozbywanie się stosów niepotrzebnych rzeczy, które przez 10 lat małżeństwa nagromadziliśmy. Są jeszcze „porządki” zdrowotne, czyli seria lekarskich wizyt kontrolnych. Na porządki duchowe też przyjdzie czas. Przy okazji jesteśmy bardzo wdzięczni Beacie i Błażejowi Kotełko, którzy podobną podróż odbyli rok temu za dzielenie się z nami swoimi doświadczeniami. W czasie swojej podróży stworzyli wspaniały blog pod www.hoparoundtheglobe.com, który gorąco polecamy. To tyle jak na pierwszy raz.
